DescriptionMalcolm Brown was born on 5 October 1925 in Redcar, North Yorkshire. After serving in the RAF during World War II he studied Geology at Durham University and did his DPhil at Oxford. After a short time in the United States he returned to Oxford to lecture in 1955. In 1967 he became Professor of Geology at Durham. His expertise as a petrologist resulted in his being appointed as a Principal Investigator by NASAand he brought a sample of moon rock to the UK. He was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1975 and became Director of the Institute of Geological Sciences in 1979 when he succeeded Austin Woodland. He retired in 1985 when he was knighted and died on 27 March 1997.
