Description Cyril James Stubblefield was born on 6 September 1901in Cambridge. He studied geology at Imperial College, London and graduated ARCS and BSc in 1923. In the same year the college appointed him departmental demonstrator in geology. He joined the Geological Survey in 1928 as a field geologist, but joined the Palaeontology Dept soon after. He was secretary of the Palaeontographical Society 1934-1948. He served as Chief Palaeontologist 1947-1953, Assistant Director 1953-1960 and Director 1960-1966, succeeding William Pugh. It was Stubblefield who saw the transfer of the Survey from the DSIR to the new Natural Environment Research Council in 1965 and the amalgamation of the Overseas Geological Surveys. He was knighted in 1965 and died on 23 October 1999 age 98.
